Don’t Forget Who You Are (Inspired by Michael W. Smith)
In the final blog of our three-part series “Creating With Purpose,” we’ll take a look at what Michael W. Smith’s shared during the Zoom session with FOR KING & COUNTRY, when he encouraged us stay focused as Christian creators. He pointed out the importance of recalling God’s promises, especially when distractions try to pull us off course. My hope is that this three-part blog series has encouraged you as a creator and reminds us all to stay true to our calling in a world full of attention grabbers. Let’s get started!
Remembering Our Identity in Christ
As creators, it’s crucial we strive to remember who we are and who we serve. I know firsthand how easy it can be to lose sight of our identity in Christ, especially when we get caught up in the pursuit of success, recognition, or influence.
Micheal reminded us that we are more than conquerors through Christ.
…despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. (Romans 8:37 NLT)
If this is something you need to say over yourself hundreds of times a day, do it. No matter how difficult the creative journey may be, we must never forget the power that lives within us and God’s promises. Your worth is not defined by the world’s standards. What an important thing to remember as a creator. There are so many voices telling us what we should and shouldn’t be doing, but it’s crucial we’re in tune with God.
He also encouraged everyone to surround themselves with great people and to pray for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done in their lives. Staying focused is being anchored in the faith that God is guiding our steps, even as creators.
3 Ways Creators Can Ground Themselves in God’s Promises
So, how can we ground ourselves in God’s promises as creators? To be honest, I think we can over complicate this. I know I have at times.
1) Staying grounded as a creator should begin with prayer.
Think about this, we have a direct connection to the Creator of the universe! When we align ourselves with Him through prayer, our perspective shifts and we can see things more clearly. It’s in those moments of stillness with God that we are reminded of our deeper purpose as creators.
2) Another way to stay grounded is by staying in His Word.
We all know that reading the Bible every day can help us understand who God is, His promises, and the purpose behind our why. We should also get into the habit of reading with anticipation, inviting God to be a big part of our creative journey. The Bible is a fantastic resource for us creators to find inspiration and guidance.
3) Accountability is super important to being grounded.
Having a group of fellow believers who understand your struggles as a creator, who will pray with you, and help keep you on track can change things. The creative journey isn’t meant to be done alone. We’re stronger together and always remember that we’re on the same team!

Never Grow Tired
It can be difficult for creators to keep going when life gets tough, algorithms change, or your content gets filtered, but Michael reminds us to “never grow tired of doing good.”
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. (Galatians 6:9 NLT)
Even when we can’t see the results, trust God is working through us. Our purpose and mission goes beyond chasing vanity metrics or recognition, which the world often pushes us to obsess over. Instead, your purpose lies in using your creative talents to inspire, serve, and uplift others for a greater good, ultimately guiding them to Jesus.
Before I wrap up this series I want to reemphasize one more point that for KING & COUNTRY and Michael W. Smith touched on. As creators, we must be open to God’s divine interruptions. You might want to give that another read! I’ve jotted it down on a post-it note for myself. Life doesn’t always go as planned, and our goals might not turn out the way we hoped and dreamed of. But those unexpected twists can be where God does His best work in us, personally and in our creative journey. Trust in His timing and plan. At times you may feel like “if I only had more _____” then things would be better, but maybe it’s more trust we need. While you might not see a “how to go viral” video emphasizing this mindset, never forget that your creative journey will have ups and downs. These twists and turns are all part of the bigger picture in the Creator’s story, and let’s be honest, if everything was in straight lines, it would be pretty boring for us creators.
